Contract: Full-time, unlimited

About this position:

This is a highly interesting role marrying our climate and oceans campaigns and involving research and policy advocacy in both areas.

You will be working towards our Germany-specific goals and supporting the work of EJF’s global ocean team, whose work includes documenting illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing and associated human rights abuses.

EJF uses field-based evidence to provide the evidence necessary to drive advocacy for policy changes with governments and improved corporate practices in the seafood sector. Central to this work is our advocacy for greater transparency in global fisheries through the adoption of EJF’s Charter for Transparency.

This role will directly connect EJF’s IUU and transparency campaigns with key climate and biodiversity priorities in Germany and internationally, including addressing bottom trawling, the establishment of fully protected areas to extend to 30% of ecologically representative marine areas by or before 2030 (30x30); advocacy to drive a moratorium on deep sea mining and the protection and restoration of “blue carbon” habitats, specifically including mangroves, seagrasses, corals and coastal wetlands.

Our climate campaign is raising awareness of, and driving advocacy to address, the interconnections between the climate crisis and human rights worldwide, alongside the immediately urgent need for a transition to a real zero-carbon global economy.

We advocate for environmental and climate justice, promoting action for the recognition of the right – for all communities - a safe, sustainable environment.

Given the EU specific and broader global importance of German government policies and German industry activities, EJF has identified its work in Germany as a core organisational priority.

We are looking for an outstanding, world-leading professional with a strong understanding of German, European and international climate and oceans policy. You will bring expert analysis, a profound knowledge of environmental and climate justice issues, together with a creative strategic and tactical thinking. Together with this you will be able to deliver compelling presentations in person and in writing and will have a deep commitment to EJF’s mission and goals.

Tasks:

Your tasks will include, but not be limited to the following:

  • Research and develop campaign strategies for our oceans and climate campaigns in close collaboration with EJF colleagues and partners and for approval by the CEO. Once approved you will work to implement the agreed strategies.
  • As directed, research and write high-calibre reports and briefings on specific issues, including IUU fishing and wider ocean protection, alongside key issues related to climate change mitigation and climate justice
  • Help to research, build and maintain EJF’s network of relevant German policy-makers and strategic allies from civil society, industry and other sectors to increase EJF's reach
  • Develop close relationships with key decision-makers in the German government and Parliament as well as European institutions, in particular the European Parliament, relevant to our goals
  • Monitor and identify opportunities in relation to policy developments; develop and implement creative approaches and effective ways of reaching out to policy-makers
  • Work with the EJF communications team to build relationships with relevant media to disseminate EJF findings and recommendations; writing press releases, blogs and news stories
  • Support the drafting of funding proposals and projects reports for major donors, including German government
  • Oversee translations, campaign films and other campaign materials
  • Report regularly, in detail to CEO and the management team

What you bring:

  • At least 3 years of proven professional experience in research and political advocacy or public relations, ideally in the areas of climate, oceans, environment, human rights or other relevant policy fields
  • High level of reliability, determination and self-motivation as well as the ability to work effectively with a small, dynamic and international team, but also to work independently and taking the initiative
  • Profound knowledge of research methods and approaches, and target group-oriented preparation of the same
  • In-depth understanding of German, European and international oceans and climate policy, environmental and human rights-related policies
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in German (mother tongue) as well as fluency in English (C2) and the ability to adapt your style to appeal to and convince different target groups
  • You enjoy challenging tasks and bring diplomatic skills to build partnerships and alliances
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills
  • Creativity and commitment to finding new ways to develop our work and engage the public with our messages
  • Great sense for detail and accuracy of content
  • Proven ability to deliver dynamic and engaging presentations to diverse audiences
  • A clear, strong and demonstrable commitment to EJF’s Mission and goals.

We offer you:

  • An annual leave that increases every year
  • Home office two days a week after completion of probationary period
  • Cycle to work programme
  • A highly motivated and open-minded team of committed colleagues and the opportunity to develop and implement compelling propositions that can deliver campaign and organisational goals.
  • The position offers great opportunities for your professional growth and personal development in close collaboration with our diverse team in our offices across Europe, Africa and Asia
